How to: dog-proof your wedding
Avoid any potential mishaps with this quick pup-friendly guide to your big day.
With more and more pet-parents including their dogs on their big day, we figured we could help save you the trouble (and any potential mishaps) by sharing some tips and suggestions on ways to dog-proof your wedding.
After all, your furry best friend is an important member of your family, and including them will surely make the celebration even more memorable.
Here’s how you do it:
Assess their temperament
Consider your dog's personality and behavior. If your dog is well-behaved, comfortable in new environments, and enjoys being around people, they may be a good fit for the wedding. If your dog tends to be anxious or reactive, it might be better to find an alternative role for them or consider leaving them in the care of a trusted friend or family member during the event.
Check your venue’s regulations
There’s nothing worse than making plans for your pet and then finding out your venue doesn’t allow dogs—reduce this unnecessary stress by making a quick call to your venue or by researching their pet policy online.
Visit the venue together:
Schedule a visit to the venue with your dog ahead of time to assess any potential hazards or areas of concern. Familiarize yourselves with the layout and identify any spaces that may require special attention, such as staircases, balconies, or decorative elements that could be tempting for your furry friend.
Consider your flowers
We know you want your favorite flowers for your big day, but if they are harmful or toxic to your pet, we hate to say this but your favorite flowers won’t make the cut.
Choose pet-friendly vendors
Confirm that your selected vendors are comfortable with pets and have experience working in dog-friendly environments. This includes the photographer, caterer, planner, and any other professionals involved. It's crucial to inform them of your intention to have your dog present so they can plan accordingly.
Create a designated dog zone
Set up a comfortable space with bedding, water, and toys in a shaded area, away from loud music and crowded areas. This will give your dog a safe retreat when they need some downtime.
Hire a dog handler
If you're concerned about managing your dog's behavior or ensuring they stay calm during the ceremony, consider hiring a professional dog handler who can assist with keeping your dog calm and comfortable. This person can handle any necessary walks, feeding, or bathroom breaks and ensure your dog's well-being throughout the event.
Tip: Pack a bag with their essentials: including food, treats, poop bags, toys, and any medication they require.
Choose appropriate attire or accessories
Whether a cute doggy tuxedo or a floral collar, make sure your dog has appropriate clothing for the day. Avoid using accessories that could pose a choking hazard or cause discomfort. Additionally, take into account the weather conditions to ensure your dog doesn't overheat or get too cold.
Notify your guests
Let your guests know in advance that your dog will be attending the wedding. Inform them of any specific guidelines or expectations, such as refraining from feeding the dog or approaching them during key moments. It's essential to communicate this information clearly to avoid any unintended incidents.
Bring them to the rehearsal
If your dog is part of your wedding, make sure to practice with them in the wedding setting beforehand. This way, they become familiar with the environment and their role.
Tip: Train them to respond to commands and use positive reinforcement throughout.
Get them professionally groomed
Schedule a grooming session for your dog before the wedding day to make them look and feel their best. This will help minimize shedding and ensure they are clean and fresh for all the photos and interactions.
Prioritize their comfort, safety, and well-being
If at any point you feel that your dog may not enjoy or be able to handle the wedding environment, it's perfectly okay to find alternative ways to include them or arrange for their care while you celebrate your special day. See our list of roles your dog can play in your wedding.
Remember, while dog-proofing your wedding is essential, it's also important to be flexible and adaptable, as animals can be (and usually are) unpredictable. By considering these suggestions and planning ahead, you'll be able to create a joyous celebration that includes your furry friend while ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
