From Portuguese Water Dogs frolicking in the pool to Schnauzers relishing beach days, it is essential for all pups who love the water to keep their skin healthy. The experts at Parker & Ace share their tips for keeping your swimmer's skin happy and hydrated.

How water can affect your dog's skin

While clean water is generally good for your dog's skin, the problem lies in what's added to the water, especially in excess. While a daily run through the sprinklers in the summer might not cause any noticeable issues, saltwater can be extremely drying to your dog's skin. You can likely guess that chlorine will have a similar effect. Essentially, if your dog enjoys frequent swims, you'll need to be diligent about keeping their skin healthy to prevent dryness, flakiness, and dullness. Chlorine and other chemicals can strip away natural oils from their coat, leaving it looking dull and lifeless.

How to take care of your dog’s skin

Here are a few tips to help protect your dog's skin while they enjoy their aquatic adventures:

  • Conditioning: For dogs who swim frequently, consider applying a light coat of pet conditioner to their coat before swimming. Gently massage it into their skin to create a protective barrier against harsh chemicals and saltwater.
  • Sunscreen: Dogs can get sunburned, especially those with thin coats. Apply a moisturizing sunscreen to their exposed skin.
  • Rinse and Dry: After swimming, rinse your dog thoroughly with fresh, clean water, regardless of whether they swam in the ocean, pool, lake, or another body of water. Dry them with a towel and apply a thin layer of conditioner if desired.

Being proactive and taking preventative measures

To keep your dog's skin healthy during swimming season, aim to bathe them at least once a week with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, ideally those containing oatmeal. Consider talking to your veterinarian about adding Omega-3 fatty acids to your dog's diet. Some studies suggest these supplements or oils can promote skin suppleness.

It's important to remember that dogs with open wounds or cuts should avoid swimming. Water, especially stagnant water, can contain harmful bacteria that could lead to infections.

If you have a dog who loves to swim, you're in luck! Swimming is a fantastic form of exercise for dogs and a fun activity you can enjoy together. Just remember to be mindful of their skin care needs, and always prioritize safety during their aquatic adventures.
