Checklist: Don't Leave Home Without These Items
Having a pet means bringing along more than just your phone, wallet, and keys. From water bowls to towels, these are the things you should always have with you.
THE 'DON’T FORGET' LIST
☐ Collar and ID tags
Make sure your pet is wearing an appropriate-fitting collar with up-to-date ID tags, including your phone number and any important medical information.
☐ Leash
To keep your pet safe while exploring new areas, make sure to bring a sturdy leash that is appropriate for their size and strength.
☐ Water bottle & bowl
Restaurants and bars are normally great about providing pets with water but it’s a good idea to bring a bottle of your own as well. Make sure you also have a collapsible water bowl so they can take drink breaks no matter where you are.
☐ Food & food bowl
If you'll be away from home for a while, don’t forget to bring along some of your pet's favorite food, as well as a travel food bowl.
☐ Poop bags
Perhaps the most embarrassing thing to forget at home—ensure you have poop bags with you so you can pick up after your pet.
☐ Medications
If your pet is on medication, make sure to bring enough for the entire trip and keep it stored in a secure container. Ensure it is sealed tightly and kept out of your pet’s reach!
☐ Toys and treats
Bringing a few of your pet's favorite toys and treats not only provides a sense of comfort in a new environment, but keeps them entertained as well.
☐ Pet carrier or crate
Make sure to bring a carrier or crate for safe transport in the car or on public transportation.
PET PARENTS OF THE YEAR ALSO BRING:
☐ First aid kit
Bring a pet-specific first aid kit that includes items like gauze, antiseptic wipes, and tweezers for removing ticks. It is also helpful to bring a list of nearby urgent care and ER clinics in case of an emergency.
☐ Towels
Bring a couple of towels in case your pet gets wet or muddy. Your car will thank you.
☐ Sunscreen
If your pet has light skin or thin fur, consider applying sunscreen to protect them from the sun's harmful rays.
